Question:

Will a 1997 Explorer transmission fit in a 1992 Explorer?

My block is cracked in the 97 and I can buy a 92 for $300 that only needs a transmission so I was wondering if I could combine the 2?

Answer:

the trans will fit no problem, just not sure about the electronics. or the shifter linkage. i'm sure you could get it to work.
break whatever is causing that sound
1997 Transmission will not work in a 1992 explorer. The 1997 Explorer,4.o v6 model, was equipped with a 5r55e transmission. This 5 speed transmission is fully electronicly controled, and will not shift without the on-board computer system controling it. The 1992 Explorer was equipped with the a4ld transmission, which is considered a hybrid This 4 speed transmission shifts 1st through 3rd whithout electronics. The 1992 vehicle is not equipped with the electronics necessary to operate a 1997 transmission. Sorry to deliver the bad news. Good luck !
