A roller coaster at the top of the first hill has a LOT of potential energy. As a matter of fact it has enough potential energy to carry it the rest of the way around the track.
Firestone makes rubber sheet in 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 feet wide and is sold by the 100 foot roll. Then that is applied to the flat roof with an adhesive. So in a sense you have an umbrella over the house. However, this is sold in black and it is a high absorber of radiant sun energy. So if you put this onto a pitched gable roof, the sun's rays would at most times be more perpendicular to the sun, and that would abosorb a lot of this radiant energy . So you can see that a flat roof most of the year has the benefit of a low angle to the sun at least in the in the US.
