I have started the process of upgrading the wheels on my track and mountain bikes. Consequently, I want to learn to maintain them. Specifically I want to learn how to regrease and true them. I would prefer to to do this on a wheel that I won‘t need. I was considering scouring thrift shops and flea markets for a few old bicycle wheels and experimenting on those. My concern is that the wheels I aquire might be older and different than my upgraded wheels. Are they? Will they be so different that learning maintenence on them won‘t transfer to my new wheels? Is there a specific timeframe I should look for. My goal would be to get these practice wheels at the cheapest possible price.
sort of yes sort of no rims can vary carbon aluminum steel/chrome spokes can vary number pattern hubs can vary freewheel freehub i would say 60% would transfer you also need different tools for different hub types wle
