will driving around with tires an inch larger than factory specs eventually damage your front end axels ?

lets say you have a grand am and the wheels it came with were not factory. They are 17+ inch custom Rims and when you turn corners to sharp OR hit the littlest of bumps on the road the wheels will make this large rubbing sound on the fender on turns during bumps the wheels hit the wheel wells. WE JUST had the car taken in to replace the front end axels rods and joints. the mechanic says they were really bad.The car is not that old. My husband does not want to believe that these huge rims are damaging the axels and rods he has factory size rims but prefers the 17‘s instead because of style. I think if he keeps riding around with these huge rims its going to cause the exact same damage to the rods again and its dangerous for turning in emergency situations will some one tell him for his own safety an our little ones that he needs to put the proper size on the car for safety reasons to prevent more damage and future repairs . Absolutely, oversize wheels/tires will definately speed the rate of wear and tear on a cars suspension systems. The car was designed to have a certain diameter and weight on it, and when you change that, the normal function is interpted, thus making is unsafe as well. The only time you can change the size of the rims is to also change the size of the tire to maintain the same diameter. If there is rubbing, you are definately endangering those in the car, but also others on the road. The rubbing will cause undue friction on the tire itself increasing the chance of tire failure (blowout) which can cause you to lose control of your car.
The only way wheels can damage axles is if they are incorrect offset/back spacing this will put undue stress on things like wheel bearings/axles. Its not the size of the wheel nesseceraly causing the problems but maybe the size of the tyre. If the factory rolling radius is kept (total hight from bottom 2 top of tyre) lets pretend 20inches is factory it makes no diff if its a 19in wheel and 1 inch tyre or 10inch wheel and 10 inch tyre as the full rolling radius remains 20 inches you may be running something like a 215/45/17 tyre and a change to 205/40/17 may solve everything. Wheel width can play a big part 2 if the vehicle had factory 13's or 14's chances are a 7inch wide wheel will be max width ie 17X7 inch if they are 7.5 or 8 in wide you will have probs- what kind of car is it and do you no wheel specs? I.E offset (normaly a number between 20 and 50) and full wheel size I.E 17X7 or 17X8 etc also factory tyre size i should be able to calculate what you should be running

This should not cause all the war problems you are having, I have done custom vehicle for the past 15 years and always run larger tiresyou may need to change the tires width that you are running to stop the rub on the inner fender well areabut just going to a larger size especially the relativly small change in size that you have done should not cause these problems.
