i am building a new 2 family house in New York. My plumber installed some new copper pipes in the attic instead of running through the floor. i am afraid they will burst in chilled winter time. He insulated the cold water pipe only with foam and asked me to put another insulation batts on the outside of ridge when i do the whole house insulation. am i gonna have problem? will there be any condensation problem?
If your plumber thinks they will be OK they probably will be BUT. How much insulation will be under and on top of the pipes? If very little to none under but a lot on top then you should be OK. The foam insulation around the pipe should take care of the sweating in the summer. I would also discuss this with your building inspector. If the plumber is trying to cheat, then the inspector will make him change it at his expense not yours (if he is working on a bid basis and not T M). there are very specific rules about running supply lines in cold areas.
There shouldnt be any condensation problems, just dont forget to fully insulate the loft ridges, a burst pipe in the loft can be very expensive, so get it done properly.

No try accept their suggestion.
