I have an 01 KLR enduro with no problems. I am going to get it inspected in massachusetts tomorrow and was a little worried about the tires. Because it is an enduro it has dirtbike tires on it and they are a little worn but still have tread. Is there a guideline to judging if they will pass or fail like the penny trick for cars? thanks in advance.
Tread depth rules apply to all makes of motorcycle tires - including dirt bike tires approved for street use. 2/32 tread depth required to pass inspection. Same deal with the penny trick. Stick a penny (top of Lincoln's head first) into the tread groove at the center line of the tire. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head, the tire will not pass inspection.
You say there are dirt bike tires on it now, I don't know if off-road tires will pass inspection regardless of tread depth. Road worthy tires have wear indicators on them and once you get down to that level they may/may not pass inspection.
