Question:

Windshield Wipers in Snowstorms?

In Vermont I have noticed that some people lift their winshield wipers up after getting out of thier cars before a snow storm is forcasted. What is the beneift of this? Also, is there a way to prevent the ice from forming so thick on the windshield?

Answer:

The benefit is that it prevents the windshield wipers from getting frozen to the windshield. One trick that I learned if ice is expected, is to throw some snow on the windshield. As long as it's not a huge ice storm, the snow will prevent the ice from forming in a big sheet on your windshield and you will be able to wipe most of it away.
Probably to prevent their wipers from freezing to their windshield? (I don't know) I suppose you could put a blanket on your windshield at night and take it off in the morning?
they do this to prevent the windshield wipers from freezing to the windshield. you could place a sheet of plastic over the windshield to prevent the ice from sticking to the glass. they used to make a product called Ice Blocker, but i would not recommend it because it left a film on the windshield that was hard to see through. you can get an additive to add to your windshield washer fluid to lower the freezing point from -20 to -35 degrees. they also make winter blades that are totally covered in a rubber booties like thing but they are 7-9 bucks apiece just for the blade
