Question:

Windshield Wipers wont work?

My sisters truck windshield wipers wont work last month me and her went to elmont, NY to watch some horse racing and on the way home it started raining and all of a sudden the windshield wipers stopped working so i had to stick my head out the window to tell her if there were turns because it was also foggy so we are trying to fix them now but when we tightened the bolts on them and then we try to get them working all we hear is the motor for the wipers trying to get them going but it just wont go and sometimes i push them down then up they work for a second then just stop i just do not know what to do i can sometimes fix things on her truck but this is not happening so what is wrong with the wipers and what can i do to fix them?

Answer:

The gears are broken inside the wipers motor. Replace the gears or replace the motor.
HI You'll need to get a new wiper motor All tho its running it is not turning the gear inside that moves the wipers It may be stripped or broken. Its a plastic gear. good luck tim
It sort of depends on what kind of truck you have, and what wore out or broke. Try these things with the key on but the engine not running, so you can hear better: Try the wipers at all settings, including wash and mist if you have them. If it is an electrical problem, you probably won't hear anything There is a little transmission that is part of the wiper motor, and sometimes a gear will wear out, and then you might hear the motor run, but nothing will move. Sometimes a part of the linkage between the motor and the wipers will break, and then you might hear the wiper motor, the washer might squirt, but the wipers won't move. There might be a clunking or scraping sound, too. Usually there is a kinsplinedooved or ridged (splined is what it is called) part that sticks out of the plastic or metal cover that the wiper arms connect to, and they can wear out and then one wiper will now move back and forth, but the other one still can. It's very rare for both to wear out at the same time. If it's electrical, you may need to replace the motor, or it may be the switch or wiring, but usually the motor will fix it. If it's any linkage, including the shafts that the arms attach to, or the arms, themselves, it needs to be replaced, and a junkyard is the best place to get parts from. If you take them off yourself, then you get the practice of doing it before you start tearing up your sister's truck. To get to the linkage, you usually have to remove the wiper arms and the cowl panel or cover. It will either be plastic or metal. and go just about the full width of the vehicle. Most are held on with screws or bolts, some are held on with clips. Don't bend it, don't break it. It might be stuck with a little tarrry stuff to keep it from rattling, maybe not. Once you figure that out, then you have it made. Just take out what need sreplacing, and go from there.
