It's fairly caustic. It probably did some damage to your throat and lungs, but it should heal up. I'd also suggest going to a doctor and tell them about it, and they can order some chest x-rays to ensure you're not dying (yes, that can happen too).
Wedge it. There are wedges with alarms that will go off if someone tries to force the door. Tell the landlord in writing that are sure that he wants to keep his tennants safe, and that the lack of a deadbolt or door chain is an accidental oversight that will be remedied quickly.
