Would bad axles cause an oldsmobile not to move?

Answer:

If its front wheel drive, broken cv axles will. If its rear wheel drive, shredded gears in the differential will cause it as well as broken axles. No transmission fluid or a bad transmission will cause this. Also an out of adjustment gear shift/cable will cause this.
since the axles or half shafts are what carries the power from the differential or final drive out to the wheels, if even one should fail, power will take the path of least resistance just as electricity does. the car would not move. i have had a half shaft fail at the cv joint just outside of the trans and i was stuck with an unwanted neutral in traffic at a light. yes indeed it can happen.
