This is not something that I would advise. In this case, lower would put you out of the standard line of vision for most motorists, not something that I would want in a place like Chicago, or any urban area for that matter. Too great a chance that you will find someone who is texting, or eating, or adjusting the radio, or arguing with the wife, or otherwise distracted long enough for you to end up under the vehicle. If you are concerned about falling and rough rides, get a full suspension mountain bike instead. it will be a more stable platform because of the larger tires and the suspension will help with the bumps and potholes. Get a brightly colored helmet and a don't hit me I'm human vest, drivers in the city have actually grown accustomed to looking for such a sight. Please ignore the donkeys that answered, they are not thinking with their big heads and brains.
An at will employer may fire you for any reason whatsoever. Even if they do not like you. They don't have to have a reason. You as an at will employee may also quit at anytime. For no reason whatsoever, even if you just don't like them. ;) It is a 2 way street.
After reading the replies thus far, I have to conclude that most of these people have never actually ridden a recumbent trike in a city setting. I, on the other hand, have been riding a recumbent tadpole *and* a delta in city environments for about 6 years. While tadpole trikes *can* be quite low to the ground, most decent delta trikes sit the rider quite high, putting your head height up near where most car-drivers are. This gives you very good opportunities for eye-contact with other drivers, and improved visibiity. Also, it's basically a myth that people can't see you. A recumbent trike is wider than a typical bike, so the fact that you stand out makes you more visible from the start. Bright clothing adds to the safety. Also, since we know drivers can see curbs, yellow lines, and other objects down close to the road, they will also see you as long as you make yourself seen - take the lane, wear reflective shirts, use mirrors, mount a loud horn, maybe add a flag. Of course you should not rely on cars to see you. Be vigilant. Keep an eye on your surroundings while riding. You can also consider a glass fiber body over the trike. It makes you even more visible, improves your aerodynamics, and protects you from bad weather. That is what I've done with my trike. Never had a problem of people not seeing me on the road in the city of Copenhagen, Denmark.
