the only heavy equipment that you need a license for is a crane operator but that is changing and now just using a fork truck people are asking for a paper of some sort from a school the training is not long 6 weeks 10 or even 20 most of the people taking it have it paid for by the government i am in Canada the teacher will pretty much let you try many different ones at first then later you focus on one or two when you finish the coarse don't think you will be so skilled as to just walk up to the sites and say here i am hire me i can do it some companies will send you away others will say get on this machine and dig a hole 10 feet long 4 feet wide and 7 feet deep make it all fit the dimensions then if you do that and do it fast enough they might hire youmight is the key word here if you can find someone that knows someone that has a piece of equipment they might let you come along for abit watch and when its safe let you work the thing that is for sure the route to take if your thinking of paying out the money for this yourself you might suck at it and hate it or you might be very good and manage to get with the guy who has the machine as a helper and train on it from time to time until you have it down , i hope this helped
