I just got a 2000 Silverad0 4X4, 4.8 auto. The abs light comes on when I start to drive so I think it is a wheel speed sensor but how do I know for sure? What is the procedure for pulling the abs codes? Also I noticed the BRAKE light comes on eventually after driving a while but seems intermittent. Could that be related to the ABS problem? There is no leak in the system. I hate to have to take this in to the dealer if there is a simple way to pull abs codes. Thanks.
no simple way to pull it, however your in luck, it makes no since to buy a scanner yourself, what you need to do is take it to an independent shop that does brakes, shocks etc. since it is a 2000 model the tools used to repair them are very easy to come by and most independent shops can check it and fix it for a third of a dealer.
I just ran your vehicle throught the NHTSA website and found three recalls listed for the brake system on your vehicle. The ABS related recall summary is as follows: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: LIGHT DUTY PICKUP TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH 4-WHEEL DISC BRAKES. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE AN ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MOTOR CONTAINING AN OUT-OF-SPECIFICATION SPRING CLIP. THIS CLIP COULD ALLOW THE MOTOR BEARING TO BECOME MISALIGNED. IF MISALIGNMENT OCCURS, EVENTUALLY THE ABS WOULD BE NON-FUNCTIONAL. Run your truck and/or your VIN by your local dealer's service department, they can tell you if your vehicle is eligible to be repaired at no cost to you.
take it to your local auto-zone they will pull the codes free of charge
