I just turned 18,got my License,Insurance and purchased a 1996 Chevy Geo Metro.It‘s not the most attractive car but I love it because it‘s in awesome shape and of course who can beat 45 to the gallon?. But this morning I decided to go to Church and as I was leaving,I backed out of my parking spot with no problem,But when I shifted to park,the car would not move and was making these Gnarly grinding noises. I was told the Transmission‘s Spider Gears broke then I was told it might have something to do with the wheels ?-I don‘t know and right now I feel as if I am up Sh*t creek W/O a paddle and Just wanting more opinions on what it might be and how much a new tranny might be ??Responses are appreciated and Thanks!

The dipstick filler tube is under the hood near the rear of the engine. There's a little black knob but no stick is attached. The purpose for this is that to properly check fluid level, the trans. fluid temperature has to correspond with the readings on a special dipstick that's inserted by a technician. To do this at home you will need a scanner to read trans. temp. and the dipstick which can cost more $100.00.

it won,t go anywhere if you shifted to park. i think you mean drive don,t you? did you check the fluid to see if it,s dry? it might even be the transmission filter too.
Check the transmission fluid level. This is done with the transmission in park with the engine idling with the engine warmed up, after going through all the gears. When was the last time the transmissionn fluid and filter were changed? How many miles are on the car? Check the linkage and the transmission fluid pressure. If it's old the cables could have stretched and sometimes old automatic transmission can really benefit from a slight increase in transmission oil pressure.
