a bit info about push pipe fittings had water pouring through celing?

just wonder if anyone can give me a wee bit info, sitting tonight and i heard a pop then water went in kitchen n water absolutely pouring through ceiling ran up stairs and it was a push fit connection that had popped apart its onto a copper pipe, hot water, so couldn't get it pushed back in eventually got mains off seems to have just popped no reason why! its been sitting with no problems for nearly 3 years any ideas why this has happened now thanks in advance
