Answer:

Our house is 40+ years old and had the same problemThere has to be a space between the outside brick and the sheet rock inside the homeIt can be blown in from the attic, and or like the other person suggested, a hole will be drilled at the top of the wall and insulation will be blown from the top down the wallThe only problem with that method, is that it will eventually all sink to the floor, inside the wallIf you have a crawl space, like we do, we insulated under the house tooInsulate around your outlets tooYou be surprised on how much is loss through them:-)
It all depends whether the walls to your house have a cavity! If they do - and they were building cavities 50 years ago, then its easyIf not you can only do it from the inside or outside - inside is more common although it does steal a little inside spaceTo check you have a cavity or not, most walls are constructed greater than 250mm thickIf its only 220 - 240 then likely noAlso check to see if there are any ends of bricks showing externally (headers)You generally don't fit these in a cavity wallHope this helps!
IF it's solid brick you probably don't need wall insulationIf it's Brick veneer then some blown isulation will workThese older style houses lost a lot of heat through floors, window (usually single glazed) and poor roof design with no insulationWhat about the under floor zoneAnother common thing was a half inch gap between floor boards and the wallPut a soft rubberised seal if there's a gap there(If the area around your walls feels cold then this is very likely the cause.) Look at double glazing and draught excludersLook at possibly sealing the roof with a foil barrier.
i think those are your only 2 options1- blown insulation 2- tear walls and install cut-to-fit sheets of insulation and fix the walls I can't think of any alternatives waitYou could cut a small section of sheet rock out along the top of the wall , blow the insulation in the walls up to the cut out area, then just fix that small portion of sheet rock Hope that helps
