Question:

Can I connect my laptop to my desktop with just a network cable for data transfer.?

Can I connect my laptop to my desktop with just a network cable for data transfer?I've got a Toshiba Satellite series laptop. And a AMD desktop. Both have a network port.

Answer:

just go and buy a pc-pc network cable. on your desktop enter this: ip 192.168.0.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 default gateway 192.168.0.1 you don.t need dns. on the laptop enter this: ip 192.168.0.2 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 default gateway 192.168.0.1. now you can copy files, play lan games or whatever just enter in my network places. if you wanna add a third pc or laptop you need to buy a switch. goodluck. ps. if you have win xp on both machines it should be easy. check that youre lan ports are active. (check in bios) if you have onbord lan. WinXP professional with wireless broadband connection and is on my office's domain configured for that. so. the laptop does not have a cable lan port?? just wireless? you need or wireless on both machines. or both lan cable you have to change settings or give more details you could do a bridge connection
Can. With a laplink cable. Thru the parallel port (printer) :)
Use cross cable Cat5 Cross Cable Combination: ----------------------------- A B Orange White Green White Orange Green Green White orange White Blue Brown White Blue white Brown Green Orange Brown White Blue Brown Blue White
You need a Cross cable to get yopur job done this cable is different from normal LAN cables. You can get it at any computer store. See that your desktop and laptop have the IP addresses configured for the same network domain in simple words if the IP address of your desktop looks like 'aaa.bbb c.ddd', then your laptop should be configured to an IP address as 'aaa.bbb c.xxx'. note that only the last one needs a change (for simplicity change the IP address of the machine which doesn't have a connection to the internet) If you have Windows XP in either/both systems u can set up a local LAN connection easily
