I just read an article about raising puppies to be service dogs, and I'm interested in this possibility but I'm not really sure what they are looking for in a foster home.I live alone in a condo with a small GSD mix and two older catsI think that living in a condo with stairs and an elevator offers a unique environment for raising a service dog as I imagine not every disabled person lives in a house with a yardThey would also be raised with a dog and cats to help socialize them to other animalsHowever I do live alone and I don't think work would let me bring the puppy in, at least not very often if at allSo the puppy would be alone while I was at work.Would living alone in a condo disqualify me from the program?

You would need to ask the organization whom you would be raising forHaving other dogs and cats is a plus, as it exposes the pup to other animalsSame with stairs and elevatorsThe more environments the pup is exposed to, the betterMost organizations are looking for stable, loving homes, where the focus will be on the pupIf a yard is present, it must be fully fencedThe pups are raised to be crate trained, so leaving them alone for extended periods, while not ideal, is usually acceptableThe biggest hurdle is if you have a condo association which disallows petsDogs-in-training are not covered by Federal law, so a raiser must rely upon individual State laws when it comes to housing issues and public venue accessThe organization you will be raising for will have all the information you need for your situationWe have a wide variety of individual circumstances in our puppy raising club, from single people who live in apartments with no other animals to families who live on large farms who have all sorts of animals aroundWe have raised 4 pups for Guide Dogs for the Blind, and my wife has been a guide dog handler for the last 11 yearsWe currently have her retired guide dog, her working guide dog, a guide dog puppy, 3 cats, a parakeet and a Guinea pig in the houseAgain, talk with the organization you wish to raise forThey will be able to give you all the information you need and even help you make your raising journey a success.
