Question:

Can I run my TV power cable through the wall?

The power cord will not be inside the wall, it will be through a sheet of drywall then in a closet that is under my stairs, at no time will the power cord be inside of a wall. It will just be behind the wall and in a closet where I will plug it into a surge protector. good to go??

Answer:

I think some clarification is needed here. A contractor could NOT do this for you, because it is against NEC code (although some do anyway). You as a home owner, working on your own home, are not bound by these laws (in most areas - I here Chicago is tough). So the question becomes: Is this safe. With what you described, I see no danger in doing what you want to do. The issue of insurance is a point. If you use some cheap surge protector that happens to burst into flames and starts a fire. And an inspector for the insurance company comes out and sees the power cord, they could try to deny your claim based on that. Even though 'that' was not responsible for the fire. Your call.
No, it is against code. Flexible power cords shall not pass through building materials. You need to install a receptical behind your TV, and have an inlet for your surge protector, wir wire it into your house wiring.
Unfortunately, it is no longer easy when the walls are already in place. The only other solutions are either to run the cables along the ceiling (above tiles), or else along the bottom of the floor/baseboards. Good luck!
if okorder / You as a home owner, working on your own home, are not bound by these laws If you live out in the country, that may be true, but just try having any work done that involves a building inspector. The inspector may call you on it and I live in AZ where you can generally get away with just about anything!
