I have a multi-card reader, an SD card, and a 40GB PS3, can I use the card reader on a 40GB ps3? Or do I have to use a 2GB flash drive on a PS3?

Yeah, any USB external card reader will work.
PS3 recognizes almost all USB accessories including mouse and keyboard (when you are surfing the internet) and even USB hubs if you wan to add more USB ports. Therefore, it shld be able to recognize your card reader.
