Question:

Car help plz answer?

Ok so I have a 2001 Volkswagen jetta glx vr6 that I recently changed the clutch on everything works but I can‘t go into 2nd or 4th gear but all the outher gears work so I was wondering what could be wrong

Answer:

Possibly, the shifter cables are out of adjustment, since they were disconnected from the transmission when the trans was removed to replace the clutch. Readjust the shifter cable turnbuckles. There are several articles on Vortex on how to do that, also on YouTube. Its simple to do. 1. Apply the park brake. 2. Put the gear shift in neutral. 3. Open the hood, locate the shifter cable ends/turnbuckes and disconnect them. 4. Locate the adjustment pin on the transmission shifter shaft assembly. It is an L shaped pin in the front and directly on the shaft bearing cap. 5. Manipulate the shifter shaft by hand and twist the pin into the shifter shaft to lock the transmission in neutral. 6. Inside the car, lift the gear shift boot and cover off the center console. 7. On the gear shift shaft, there is a tear drop with a hole in it at the base of the shaft near the ball. There is a corresponding teardrop and hole below the first one. 8. Use a drill bit passed through both holes to lock the gear shift in neutral. Apply some tape around the drill so it won't fall through the holes. 9. Go back under the hood and adjust the shifter cable turnbuckles to the transmission. 10. Release the set pin from the transmission shifter shaft, and the drill bit from the gear shift. The gear shift is now adjusted to the transmission and all gears should now be usable.
