Question:

Check engine for broken tail lights?

My check engine light came on yesterday. I took it to the mechanic but they couldn‘t find anything wrong with the car. Later I went to work and on my way home I got pulled over. My tail lights were out. Could that be the cause for the check engine light?? Thank you in advance for your answers.

Answer:

Pete is correct. The check engine light comes on when the car's PCM (computer) sets a trouble code due to a fault in the emissions or powertrain management system. Places like Autozone will scan your car for free provided your vehicle is no older than the 1996 model year.
the light is not on for a tail light issue. the light is related to so many of the electrical systems in the car but the lights are not one of them since the bulbs will fail at some point. you can have a loose gas cap or a systemic failure some where. pull the codes and see what comes up.
No, a check engine light usually illuminates to let you know of a problem with your emissions system or serious engine fault. Stop by the nearest auto parts store and ask them to pull your computer codes. This will give you a starting point in reaching a good diagnosis of the problem.
