Question:

Check engine light in NY inspection automatic fail?

I just got a 99 toyota corolla from my sister in Massachusetts. The check engine light is on and has been one for awhile. She took it to two auto shops who said it's the light malfunctioning and the engine is fine. It passed it's inspection in Massachusetts but today when I went to get it inspected in NY they claim it's an automatic fail and that something is in fact wrong with the engine. Is it an automatic fail in NY just because that light is on? He says it's gonna cost me 350 dollars to fix what's wrong but I don't think I trust him. Thanks in advance!

Answer:

I lived in Louisiana, We have a 1996 tercel with 320,000 miles and the engine light has been on since about 100,000 miles, I'm surprise thats the only light bulb that we havn't changed yet ! we took it to get it check out but they said it was bad sensor that said it's polluting to much. unless we moved to California or somewhere like that nothing to worry about. We still drive it everyday and get 40mph !
Yes, automatic fail on states that test OBD2 vehicles. Get it fixed right. Pulling the bulb out and pulling battery cables to reset the computer won't cut it.
In NY It is an Automatic Failure with a check engine light on. actually If the guy looked at the car first and sent you away he did you a favor. He,by reg's and Law should have took the car in for the inspection saw It and run the complete Inspection and gave you the rejection notice. But yes either or, It does fail. Sorry.Get It fixed and the retest. But for your Information when you fix something on a OBD11 system, the car must be driven for 60 miles to reset and get a good inspection. If you don't trust the guy go somewhere else. It will be better for you all around. We have Plenty of Inspection stations in NY City or State.
