This old house is really getting to me. There is a copper pipe feeding the washing machine supply faucet. The pipe is corroded and torn. I am going to cut it off and attach a new pipe with a faucet. I have no way to weld a connection, so I plan to use an easier type of pipe. What would be the best pipe to use (with faucet on one end and connection to copper pipe on other end.) Also, how do I connect it so it will not leak? Please tell me step by step, I am not much of a handyman.

If you're using a softbox, try putting the light over-head and tilted slightly away from the background. You'll have to play with the angles to find good light. Also, keep the subject as far away from the backdrop as possible, which keeps the light as far away from the backdrop. So stretch out the paper as far as you can, while keeping only the black background in the frame.
It sounds as if you have not installed it yourself which is why you are not sure about how it works. If you are renting the property, landlords are obliged to hardwire smoke detectors to stop tenants putting themselves and the property at risk by removing the batteries. Therefore the detector will not stop squeaking until you are able to replace the batteries. I would not recommend ripping it out of the ceiling. As you can't sleep anyway, check the phone book and stroll down to the nearest battery shop!
This is not the best approach, but you can spot meter on the black background, then do an exposure compensation of -2 or -3 stops. This should get it black, but I'm not sure what this will do to your subject. If you have an incidental meter, you can get a good exposure. But with either method, I'm not sure if your flash is going to cause certain parts of the black paper to flare up, especially if it is of a somewhat reflective material. The best backdrops absorb light.
