My flagiometer indicates an eminent 9.5 eruption. Should I stay at my desk or go?
I would not risk it. At lowes you can buy a package deal of smoke detectors for 30 bucks comes with 3 smoke detectors all the same brand and you can eather battery operate them or plug them in so its nice i would go that route and not have to worry about it. Peace of Mind is Priceless
do smoke detectors have to be hardwired in older manufactured homes
First thing to do is get a circuit tester.. these are cheap and show if there is power thereturn off breakers until you find the one that controls the alarms. use your tester to make sure power is off by reading from the black wire to the white wire..Never under any circumstances hook the wires together to trip any breaker. the black wire is the hot wire the red wire is the interconnected wire to set off all alarms if one goes off..the white wire is the neutral.
Generally when hard-wire detectors are installed on a new construction, they are wired in as a series. If you take the body off the detector there will be a three wire plug-in on the back. They should be white, black, and yellow. The yellow wire is the series wire. All the detectors on the series should go off within a couple seconds, and they should all be loud. You can turn the detector off by unplugging it. If it's also battery back up, you will need to take the battery out.
