Question:

Cost of Transmission fix?

My 98 Ford Escorts transmission is going down. Its paid off and I really don‘t want to have to get a new car. Does anyone know about how much it would cost to get repaired?

Answer:

A rebuilt one would roughly run you between $1200-$1600 Intsalled.
If it needs anything other than an oil/filter change, a band adjustment, or pump replacement, don't bother. It's time to start looking for a replacement. The best and most practical place to get one is from a self service wrecking yard and do the labor yourself or find an honest mechanic that will charge a reasonable labor fee. A good mechanic can remove and replace a transmission in a few hours (3-6).
I have a '91 Fifth ave that I just went through your situation with. There are shops that just specialize in transmission repair. First off, stick with them and not your independent mechanic or dealer because what they do most of the time is buy a re-manufactured or rebuilt one and put that into your vehicle. Not that that is bad, but it does add to the cost. Now, what I found was to stay away from the big transmission guys like Cotman, or anyone nationally advertised. In my venture to find the lowest prices, I want to 5 local transmission repair shops and found one with a great price and excellent warranty. 2yr/24k warranty. If you have your transmission flushed by him every 15k miles, he will warrant it for 60k miles. My estimates ranged from $800 to $1600, and I found someone reputable for the $900 range. Just look for someone who will back their work, and you should be fine. Your escort transmission is not a huge rebuild job, so you should be able to find someone for under $1k to do the job. Hope that Helps!
No need; the stuff isn't hazardous, and any insulation is worthwhile.
