Question:

Could use some advice from artists (ceramics)?

I walked into ceramics class today only to find that my piece exploded in the kiln :( I was so sad because I put in so much effort and time into it. I have to work on another piece now and I know this sounds silly but I‘m TERRIFIED to work on it. I‘m afraid that this one will explode too when I‘m finished no matter how much I thin the walls of the clay out. Is there anything extra I can do to make sure there are no air pockets? any tips? help [

Answer:

Knead the clay you're working with like there's no tomorrow. If you think you're done kneading, knead some more. While it makes working with the clay easier, it also eliminates any air bubbles in the clay. Also when kneading on plaster, make sure none of the plaster breaks into your clay. Plaster in your clay will make your piece explode in the kiln as well! Good luck! :-)
Before you begin the pot, wedge your clay on the table and roll it out so no air will get in :) if you guys make a hand made one out of rolls, cut off the ends because that is where air will be! Good luck I hope it works. Keep trying and you'll get better! I know how ya feel hahahah :)
