You can go from a 1.5 to 2.20 if you have the frame clearance.
doubt your rim is really 1.5 all you prob know is you have a 1.5 tire and that works if that is true you can to from about 1.25 maybe to 2.1 wle
It has less to do with the rim and more to do with frame clearance. If the rim itself says 26x1.5 on it you can install any tire 26x1.5 or LARGER. Going smaller will expose the sidewall of the rim and if you hit something hard or underinflate the tires it could damage them beyond repair. Be sure when you select a tire that you get one that uses a decimal (like 1.5) instead of fractional (like 1-3/8). The fractional labeled tire will not fit on a decimal labeled rim.
