Question:

Do all roller blade bearings have a removable sheild?

I have Mission 500 Helium skates and i tried taking off the bearing shield to clean them ....but they are almost impossible to take off...i was wondering if they can come off...or im i just working my *** off for nothing

Answer:

Not all do. Some are called non-serviceable. However, although it takes work to remove them and you cannot put them back, the non-servicable shields can be removed. You take out one and reassemble the bearings with the open side to the inside of the wheel. The non-serviceable shields have small radial slits around the outside edge. To remove them, you need to punch a hole into them without dammaging the cage around the balls inside and pry it out. If you have a metal removable shield, there is a very small C clip on the outside. You should be able to feel the gap in it by tracing around the outside with a pin. Then use the pin to pick at the end of the C clip to remove it. Many of the C clips have the ends cut at an angle. One end will be much easier to pick out with the pin than the other. So if one end doesn't seem to help, try the other.
