do oil additives really stop engine noise?

Answer:

sometimes...i had good luck with seafoam stoping rocker arm noise
not any better than a oil change... if the parts are woreout then there nothing that will help.. depends on the noise and what is the cause... but i think its a cheap fix to a problem
An oil additive may stop your engine noise but that may not be the answer that you really want. If you have an engine noise its because something is wrong. You should have the noise diagnosed properly rather than sticking in an additive that could mask the problem and lead to more damage. Some of the engine additives out there will cause their own damage to your engine as well. Many of them are no more than thicker oils which may create other problems (sludge buildup, flow problems, clogged filters). You may want to try a simple safe fix, switch to a synthetic oil (Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum) and a quality filter (Bosch, Mobil 1) and see if your noise persists. There is no substitute though for having a mechanic diagnose your issue and let you know how serious it is or isn't. Good luck.
