I am trying to buy a 1989 5.0 Mustang, and it currently has slicks on it. We are trying to get it street legal to drive it before we decide to purchase it, and I was thinking all we‘d have to do is get new tires. Does it have any other difference like different type of axles that we would have to replace to get it street legal?
Hello No it wouldn't You do not say how they are different? If you look at a motor cycle you will see that the back one is always wider than the front and sometime bigger in diameter as well Car tyres are listed as 175/60/16 175 Width of tyre mm / 60 Depth of tyre 60 % of Width mm / 16 Diameter of Wheel Rim Inches. If you have 2 bigger tyres fit to rear as these wheel do not turn the car Tyres best if all Radial or Cross-ply, If 2 and 2 have both Radial fitted to front or rear axles. Dangerous if 1 of each fitted to same axle. Andy C
Normally modified axles are perfectly street legal so switching the tires only should get you where you want to be However you do need to ask the owner one other Question because if he/she added Slicks and racing axles they may have made one other dragracing only alteration you will need undone to run on the Street! Does this car have a Spool in the Rear axle? A Spool sort of locks the rear axles together and so the pull together at the same time, great for straight line driving but a real danger for turning corners with a street car if it has a spool have the spool removed and a conventional center section installed you can use the racing axles with the conventional center section with no drawbacks I help best friend from High school Build his Pro Street 1971 Duster with a 440 Big Block and 6 narrowed Rear axle (Moser AXles) Walt
Not at all. Most guys I know that run slicks drive to the strip with street tires and then put the slicks on before they race. If everything else is legal on the car, then I doubt they took the time to mod the axel. Just my $.02
