I was a project manager, working on a pier replacement project at a Wastewater Treatment Plant, at the Brooklyn Navy YardFrom where I was, I could see the whole of Manhattan below 14th StreetI remember that it how beautiful the weather was that morning, brilliant sunshine, not too hot, low humidity, pleasant light breeze off the riverI was standing on a crane barge watching the contractors drive pilesWe just finished driving the first pile of the dayThe contractors just took the pile driving hammer off the pile, as I was looking at the hammer, and beyond it I saw a low flying planeAt first I thought that it was one of the planes bound for the LaGuardia AirportI kept watching it, expecting it to start a 180 degree turn to the left to line up with the runway, and then it just crashed into the north tower I remember looking around me, and the guys on the deck were stunnedIt was like Did we just see what we just saw? Is this for real? The guy running the crane was instantly on his cell phone trying to call his daughter who was working in one of the towersI was thinking to myself: No, that didn't happen, I'm going to turn around, and the building would still be there, intactBut, alasI was back in the field office when an inspector run in and told me that a plane hit a World Trade CenterAt first I was like: Yeah, I know, I sawWhy are you telling me, when I was standing on the barge right next to you? Only when he calmed down, I understood that he was talking about the second plane hitting the South TowerAnd then we watched them both collapseI remember then driving home and it was sirens everywhere and they never stopped I had to go by round-about way, because major highways and bridges were closedI had to go past the Red Square, the NYFD main garage, and saw them rolling out the spare and the stand-by trucksTo this day, I can't watch any documentaries, or movies about that day.
