Question:

Does a louder exhaust system waist more gas?

Hi i have a 1991 lincoln towncar and it rides so smooth but i would like it to be a little louder but i dont want to waist more gas so is an exhaust system guna make it waist more gas?Is there a type of exhaust that doesnt waist more gas but is really loud?

Answer:

Any change to the exhaust to make it louder via a different muffler would not affect your MPG, or at least to any noticeable degree. A better breathing exhaust will help your engine run a bit better, and therefore use a bit more gas, but the fact that it is a 1991 Lincoln, the engine is likely pretty dirty, and that will hurt your MPG more than any muffler.
The exhaust system itself isn't going to waste more gas, but your driving with a louder exhaust will cause your fuel mileage to plummet. The reason being is that you will drive the car harder to hear the exhaust thereby using more fuel.
It will not affect your milage, unless you drive it hard. However, that is if you get a proper system. If you straight pipe it, or remove the system all together, you will slowly destroy your valves, and you car will not run as well. It will slowly get worse and worse, until you have a leak, which will require you to tear you engine apart and rebuild it. This will happen, and I see cars in my shop like this all too much. don't skimp out, a system will run you 700s at worst. A rebuild will run you 2-3k at best.
