Question:

Does intermodal transportation compete with traditional rail? Or are they complements?

I just wanted to hear some thoughts gathered about itIn some ways I can see it being both, but it seems like intermodal is becoming the way of the future.

Answer:

Intermodal both compliments and competes with traditional railroading Intermodal capable and run areas compete with areas that do notHowever, intermodal transport is spreading across the rail system quite (relatively) rapidlyIntermodal compliments traditional rail by taking some loads that would ordinarily be highway only and puts it on a train for a portion of the cargo's journeyIntermodal also plays into the efficiency that trains have over trucks, as well as the issue with a lack of qualified truck drivers, and issue that will only get worse as time goes on On the downside, intermodal requires investments in the infastructure to support it, where it be as simple as loading ramps, to cranes that will pick the containers/trailers up off of the truck/train/boat and onto a truck/train/boat, as well as the increased weight of the container/trailer that is effectively now part of the cargo being moved from origin to destinationIntermodal is definitely a large part of the future of railroading.
