It's not the prettiest of plates, but it's not awful. It's kinda retro looking. I'm sure that if this is the new plate, there's no way of getting the old one back. Here in Texas, we have to get new plates like every 7 (I think) years due to the breakdown of the reflective material. So we never get a chance to get used to one plate.
Keep in mind that if the van is more than a couple years old and out in the sun a lot, the paint will have faded enough that you have a different paint shade under the stripes. Let the area soak in an adhesive remover like Goo Gone then heat it with a hairdryer or head gun, then scrape it off with something soft like a credit card. A hard metal scraper will cause a lot of scratches. Even a softer scraper will cause a few but you may have an easier time buffing them out.
