flowerpot grill: can i use clay to sub for sand as insulation?
I imagine any tpye of sand dirt or clay would work fine. was reading a bit on how to make that grill,,,and it says that u must light the coals in something else NOT the clay pot then transfer them into the pot.that seems really dangerous to try and move hot coals .
I would not use the clay soil since the heat from the grilling would tend to fire it and you might end up with a solid mass welded to the inside of the thing. Also, you want a dry material, not a wet one to insulate. Dry materials have different thermal properties than wet ones. Heating wet material would cause steam expansion with possibly unfortunate results. Rather than risk having an explosion involving hot coals and shards of pot, I would strongly suggest that you stick to the recommended materials. A bag of sand is cheap -- a lot cheaper than a trip to the emergency room.
