Answer:

Yes, I suppose so, but it would probably just come back onto the tent, and burn it up. Also they fires are very dangerous. But in theory, yeah, it would work. Get better soon!
Outfitting hunters and campers was nothing for Abercrombie Fitch. hell, they outfitted the British Army's nile Campaign of 1884-85. and i think they outfitted Lord Kitchener's nile Expedition in 1898. They also ran a very profitable Safari Outfitting service. Depending on the weather, you might be able to build up enough fire not to ned a tent. But IMO, you'd be a damned fool to leave an open fire burning big all night untended Am untended fire can ge out of hand quickly and easily. So if you want to rely on a fire in place of a tent, you and your partner had better split the night into watches and tend the fire all night. Night guard duty is as much about tending the fires as it is about watching for marauders, whether two-legged or four-legged. But you'd do well to have a tent in case of rain, snow or high winds. Don't forget your parents were you age once upon a time!! Just a guess but they probably went through the 70's!! Where do you think they hide something? Inside the closet in a cutout spot with shoeboxes stacked in front? Maybe in plain site? This is a ole lady and I gave up trying to find my kids stuff.
It works extremely well by reflecting the heat and was very popular back in the day. I made one out of army canvas modeled after the very tent you are talking about. While I never used it in the snow, it did work really well as far as keeping the elements off you and keeping you warm. There was one drawback. When the wind changed, the smoke would sometimes enter the little lean-to and create a problem, some times making you get out until it cleared. But even so, when your a mile or more on the banks of a small lake in the middle of the woods, it gave you a much safer feeling with a fire and a roof over your head. I used one all year so I could duck hunt that particular pothole. It allowed me to make an 8 mile boat ride in the daylight, go to the pothole, shoot ducks until dark, then stay, wake up the next day, shoot them until mid- afternoon, then make my boat ride in the daylight back to the landing. Some people in life love money and success. I have always loved having a successful hunting trip, and if game was plentiful, that was just more icing on the cake. Regardless of not seeing eye to eye with you on certain things, I wish you good health and a rapid recovery.
I think it would work. If you have ever watched survivorman you notice he makes shelters very similar to what you described.
