Question:

How accurate are muzzle loaders compared to a modern firearm?

What i would like to know is how a black powder revolver compares to a modern firearm for example a Glock in terms of accuracy and power? My argument with a friend is that modern firearms are more accurate than there black powder counterparts due to more aerodynamic bullet designs, but he keeps telling me that there is no difference.

Answer:

The accuracy depends more on the shooter than the weapon. MODERN BP guns are just as accurate as any other modern firearm of the same class. I shoot 2 groups at 50 yards with my .44 Remington BP revolver, my .45 LC Ubertti revolver, OR my step daughter's 9 mm Taurus semi-auto. In order of retained foot pounds of impact energy at 50 yards, from high to low, they are .45 LC, .44 Remington, and 9 mm; the SAME order as at the muzzle when they are fired! Note that the conical bullet for the .44 Remington is actually MORE aerodynamic than that in the .45 LC, and almost identical to the 9 mm. Now in rifles, the main difference is that the BP weapons, because they use heavier bullets and are a larger caliber than MOST modern firearms DO require a different method of shooting at longer ranges due to the much greater drop of the bullet because they have lower muzzle velocity; but at 100 yards or less there is NO appreciable difference.
My modern muzzle loader rifle is as accurate as my Winchester Model 70 30-06 at 100 yards. I don't shoot them any farther as my gun clubs range only goes out to 100 yards. As for handguns, it's more the shooter than anything.
if it's rifled it is just as accurate. if it's smooth bore it's the same accuracy as any other smooth bore gun, such has a shotgun or similar to airsoft/BB gun. in terms of power they're just as lethal. yes aerodynamic bullets make a difference, but not in accuracy. that has more to do with ballistics. a traditional bullet will loose velocity faster than a very modern polymer tipped FMJ BT. that causes less range and perhaps less accuracy, but the ranges are so great it shouldn't be a real issue.
The modern guns are much better and accurate. That is why we are not still using muzzle loaders.
ahem.......muzzle loaders are being manufactured NOW,kid.
