1998 camaro3.8L v6sometimes when i start the car, it makes this loud ticking noise that goes with the RPMIm pretty sure its the valve, anyone know how to fix it, and how much it might cost?
Engine is probably gooped up with old cruddy oil and lifters are blocked. Best solution is to go to a Mercury boat store and buy a can of Power Tune nad install contents into crankcase. Drive normally for 100 miles, and do an oil change. The chemicals in the 'Power Tune should dissolve the offending oil clots and restore the patient to good health. When the engine is clean inside, begin using synthetic oil like Mobil On or ELF oil and never deviate. Good Luck!!!
The use of transmission fluid in the gas, and in the oil will act to clean the engine. People buy upper valve lubricants when in reality that is exactly what transmission fluid does. It is a very high detergent, very thin oil. It acts to clean an engine through the gas, and in the crankcase. You don't want to add a lot in either place, though. A pint in a tank of gas a couple of times or so, and just enough in the crankcase to thin the oil you have just a bit. In extremely cold weather when I have used a 30 weight oil in a vehicle I will add one quart to my crankcase to thin the 30W oil. It makes it around a 10 to 15W. As a cleaner, and an upper valve lubricant this way there is only one drawback to its use. If your engine is prone to using oil, ie, an older or worn engine, it will start to clean so well that you will start using more oil.

HI what you are hearing is not a valve but a lifter... MAYBE... Here's a couple of things that well make it tick. 1) an exhaust manifold gasket leak well sound like a ticking lifter. ( if the noise goes away after the car warms up it might be this gasket.) 2) a bent push rod well make a lifter tick ( as the tolerances would be off) 3) a bad lifter well make a ticking sound. If it is indeed a lifter then best leave it to a pro.. As the intake would have to come off to replace ALL the lifters (you can't buy just one). If its a push rod just the valve covers well have to come off.. to isolate the sound you can use a long piece of hose 3 ft. or so. hold one end to your ear and move the other around the motor compartment and see if you can tell if the sound is coming from inside the motor (lifter), inside the valve cover (push rod) or outside the motor exhaust gasket. good luck tim
