I play minecraft beta, and I found some gold and red ore. I tried to mine it with my stone pickaxe, but the rock just falls apart and doesn‘t give me anything. Do I need a different kind of pickaxe? If so, how do I make it.
Find some iron (it's yellowish, but a bit darker than gold), it shouldn't be too hard, you normally won't have to go too far into caves. Once you have at least 3 iron pieces, you can build a furnace with cobblestone and smelt it into iron ignots. You can then craft an iron pick axe the same way you would craft a stone one. However, I must warn that red ore and gold will not be that useful unless you are trying to make a redstone contraption or make a watch. Gold is less durable than wood :/, but it's not so bad anymore. Since a recent update, Gold now destroys some blocks much faster than other tools, but it's durability is still pretty sad.
a lot of the rarer things require iron pickaxes, stone picks will just destroy the thing your thing to get. iron is in stone that has orangeish/yellowish nuggets in it, thats called iron ore, you have to use a furnace to turn iron ore into iron bars, simply use a crafting table to make a ring of cobblestone, place the furnace, right click on it. there are three boxes the top box is what you're heating, the bottom is the fuel you are using and the right box is the items that are finished, you can use wood planks coal or charcoal(obtained by putting regular wood in the furnace) once you have the iron bars just make a pick using three bars as the pick and stick as the handle(like usual)

You need an iron pickaxe to mine it, most things including diamond require an iron pickaxe. However the strongest materials like obsidian require a diamond pickaxe. You can obtain iron by finding a vein and mining with any pickaxe you have.
