Eh? They're effectively just studs that are stuck on top of the road surface. They'd only appear 'deep down' if the road had been resurfaced around the cat's eyes, instead of replacing them. EDIT: You might like to know that I have actually applied these myself, and yes, they are just drilled in to the road. They compress when vehicles drive over them (unlike the American ones which crack).
