Yes, only the paper would burn, however, the bottom of the jar might get hot enough to scorch whatever it is sitting on. Or the jar could crack if it is cold when the hot fire is lit. If you are going to do it, do it in the fireplace, on the grill, sidewalk or even the kitchen or bathroom sink away from the curtains and towels. And don't let it flare up. And don't burn much more that one sheet of notebook paper. No accelerants. You will have to pick up the broken glass. It can't be washed down the drain.
Homes don't usually get built with lightning rods, unless they are very large in size or in a storm prone area. You will know if you have a lightning rod by looking at the roof. Lightning strikes at water and pointed objects like trees, people ect. If your house is a flat roof you lessen the chance of getting struck. I have not heard of many cases of houses getting hit. It doesn't mean that it can't happen though. You can never tell with mother nature.
