They warn you not to burn a gas grill inside your home due to a risk of carbon-monoxide poisoning?I remember when 2 guys died at Charlotte Motor Speedway by burning a small heater inside a tent but my family had 3 good sized ventless propane heaters inside our home that we would use all winter.I don't get it. If I lost power, could I or should I not use my gas grill to provide some heat and why?
The people that died were using a charcoal grill. It happens all the time! Additional People have argued this question over and over on here. They say that the gas stove is OK because it has a vent over it but others say the vent isn't always on so that shouldn't be a factor. I guess it all comes down to the ratio of gas to air. In a tent or small room there will be a higher ratio and more danger. I remember my mother using those stupid kerosene heaters when I was a kid and my eyes would burn and my lungs would hurt. Not to mention my Fathers oil burning furnace that produced black cobwebs all over the house and if you blew your nose it was black. I would bet money that the manuals for the heaters your family used had similar warnings about adequate ventilation but back then it seems that nobody really paid attention to those things. These days the best thing is to have detectors to monitor the levels and use discretion. As far as the tent thing, I live in NJ and we've had some real bone heads committing accidental suicide out on the beach with those Charcoal hibachis over the years. ALSO: It isn't that the grill is any different than those heaters. It's the fact that anything cooked on it will leave residual food or liquids that can produce carbon-monoxide when burned. A heater stays clean and wouldn't have this potential risk. Picture an electric stove with 2 brand new frying pans. One is dry and clean and the other has one strip of beacon. Turn both on high and watch what happens. The clean one will get red hot and may produce a slight smell but the other one will burst into flames and smoke out the whole house to a point of having to open the windows and doors. That's the difference!
