Question:

How long can you hold wheat or rice in a commercial silo?

How long can you hold wheat or rice in a commercial silo before it is no longer usable - i.e the flour will no longer rise?

Answer:

it can hold it for more than a few weeks
The length of time that grain can be stored depends upon moisture content and temperature. Ideally grain would be stored for not over 6 to 8 months but if conditions were right it might be stored for much longer. The things that destroy stored grain or its quality are insects and mold. Grain that has high moisture content could start to ruin in only days. That is why buyers at grain elevators test moisture and refuse damp grain. Grain held for more than a few weeks is at risk of weevils and this must be addressed. There are ways to kill the weevils in the grain, depending upon if the grain is for consumption or held for seed. Flour rising is achieved by an outside agent and has nothing to do with flour quality. www1.agric .ab.ca/$department/...
