Question:

how loud is a 5kw diesel generator?

can they be quiet? I was thinking about buying one sense we seem to have an outage every winter. Just wouldn't want to have an extremely loud generator running disturbing the neighbors

Answer:

diesel generator normally make huge noise if you want to less this sound then use a soundproof diesel generator.
not less than 50dbrunning up to 80db.very rough figures. If you have the money to spend they can be pretty quiet these days. And you can silence them more, even bury them if you do it right.
Lots of people have stand-by generators. At only 5KW, you might consider a gasoline generator instead of diesel. The noise could be considerable, if the exhaust is in bad condition. If the muffler is in good shape, you can talk standing next to it, though you might have to raise your voice a bit. If you keep the generator in your garage with the doors closed, you probably won't bother anyone. If noise is your biggest concern, think about a smaller generator- something like 1200Watts. These are camping generators and are surprisingly quiet. That's the good part. The bad part is the lower output: you may only get to run the TV and cable box, not the fridge or microwave or toaster. With 5KW, you can run most of your house. (Need to do a survey for yourself before you get a generator. If you really need only a bit of power, getting too much is foolish; if you need more power, being underpowered is equally wrong.) Good luck!!
It depends on the model you buy and typically the more expensive models will equip themselves with a better muffler. (Basically each model will describe their decibel rating). I find most generators will provide about as much noise as a lawn mower. So, it is great to run during the day, but you might consider not running them during the night. I also think a diesel motor is just fine to run as a generator- I find the diesel rigs will run at lower RPMS, and last longer. If you are pluging this thing into your home, dont forget to have a professionally installed transfer switch to avoid electricuting the lineman, otherwise you will need to run extension cords to what you want powered.
