How many axles are there in a car? Two or four?

How many axles are there in a car? Two or four?

Answer:

depending on the vehicle.older rear wheel drive cars had 2 axles, a drive axle and a steering axle. newer front wheel drive cars have 3 axles, a rear axle and 2 trans axles in the front. 1 from each side of the transmission
Two for a normal car, more for Semi-trucks. For each set of tires there is an axle that connects to two tires. If you look at a truck in front of you in traffic you can see the axle that connects both the rear tires. It will have a round object in the middle (transfer case). So if you look at a car from the side and count the tires that's normally how many axles there are.
This is really a trick question. Axles are really whole shafts like on a railroad car. Even RWD vehicles that have a rear axle housing have 2 axle shafts, a right and left. And it does depend on the type of vehicle. Some FWD cars to not even have a rear axle since there is no need. They have true independent suspension.
