Question:

how serious is a broken water pump on a 95 mazda 626?

im buying a mazda 626 for 800 abd the owner selling just let me know that the water pump is going out. is it a fairly easy fix or should i keep shopping for a vehicle?

Answer:

your car WILL over heat and you will need a new engine if you dont change the water pump. most people dont have the luxury of knowing their water pump is about to go. so what you do it go down to advanced or auto zone get your self a DIY book for your car 15.00 and a water pump 50 and some accessory belts because if yoy go through all this trouble to take them off you might as well change them. also check the timing belt because you will have access to it when u remove the water pump if it looks likes its going to go bad in the next 10K or so miles change it. when you remove the pump and belt change gaskets this is most imperative!
do it yourself or pay someone else? call different shops in your area for a estimate before buying it call more than one on the sly from my experience, on the low side, about $300 up to about $500 but $800 is a good cheap deal for a 95 model and Mazda is a good car that lasts forever and is good on gas but he may be lying to you, it may very well be the headgaskets actually leaking........$1200
Keep shopping. Do you really think the seller is honest about the water pump? Sounds like he is trying to unload a car with a bad head gasket.
keep shopping, water pump will run about $30 and if you take it to a shop they'll charge $150 if not more to install, it'd be best to find a car in better condition
if the water pump goes out then the car can over heat, and if it over heats too much the motor can blow.then you will have to buy a whole new motor.it's really not a big deal to fix..for you it will be,but for a mechanic its easy.here is a BIG tip for you....i'm a car guy i do this all the time...plzzzz do not buy the water pump from a mazda dealership, you will end up paying hundreds..go to a junk yard and get a used one they work just as good, and if you can go to a near by occupational center where they have an automotive class they only charge $20 if you bring your own part.....hope this helps
