i have size 14 kniting needles and i was wondering if those were too big for kniting a scarf with regular yarn
You use the appropriate size of needle for the yarn you are usingSo a thick yarn needs thicker needles, and very fine thread needs really fine needles as wellA general rule (and there are exceptions) is that you lay two lengths of yarn side by side, and the thickness of them together is the thickness of the needles you would useThis is for most regular knitting, such as a sweaterBut for a scarf, you usually want a looser fabric, so slightly larger needles are acceptableFor something like socks, where you want a tighter fabric, you want thinner needlesIf those are all the needles you have, and the yarn is quite thin, you can sometimes double up the yarnOr use two yarns, even if they are different sizes and colours - you can often get really interesting effects that wayThe only way you will know for sure is to knit a small sample in the pattern you are usingMake it about 4 x 4 inches to get a good idea of what it looks like and feelsStart the scarf, and knit about 4 inchesis that what you wanted? Is it too tight, too loose? Make adjustments in needle size or yarn sizeYou can always pull out the stitches, and start over - the yarn won't mindThen keep a notebook with a sample of the yarn, with notes about needle size used, and the pattern usedMake a note how you liked the fabric so you will know the next time you have a similar yarn which needles to useThis will be your own personal reference libraryIf you have any yarn left, make a small sample to keep in your book as well.
