Question:

I have a leaking CV Axle?

I just bought a 1994 honda accord and saw that the cv axle seal at the transmission on the passenger side was leaking fluid. I took out the cv axle and put a new seal in, making sure that I didn‘t hurt the seal, but it was still leaking.I did it a second time, and got the same results. Does anyone know what could be the problem? I need a new cv axle on the driver‘s side, could that have anything to do with it?

Answer:

Did you put grease on the seals lip before installing the axle? Are there any burrs or gouges on the axle itself that rides where the seal is? Another possibility is you may have excessive play in the bearing inside the transmission that the axle rides on causing it to rotate abnormally thereby rupturing the seal. Having an axle that needs replacing on the drivers side could in turn cause a leaking seal because of the abnormal rotation as well but it's seldom seen. Good luck and hope this helps.
scratches and burs on the axle itself is most likely the problem inspect the shaft, are there any bad scratches or gouges on it where the seal seats on on it?if so this can not only cause the leaking it could be what made the first seal go bad.
did you get the seal in straight and did you oil up the seal lip before installing it. if you don,t oil the seal then as soon as you start moving the car the axle will get the seal leaking. pull the axle, get another seal, oil it up and make sure it goes in straight.when you install the axle watch you don,t catch it on the seal.
