Ok the 2013 Mercedes GL is just about the safest car made. You have no option to drive in 4wheel drive because it comes like that. You are never NOT in 4 wheel drive. It may be a bit costy, but its worth EVERY penny! Ive driven up mountains and in blizzards countless times (love skiing) and my car has NEVER failed me.
It relies upon on how steep the roads are and if the snow is the moist icy variety or the dry blowing variety of snow. I remember spinning the wheels of my mustang going up a steep hill. I hit one spot the place i could no longer get the automobile to flow any further. fortunately there improve into no site visitors at the back of me. i could back up slightly and then placed the automobile back in rigidity. yet every time i attempted to flow forward the wheels could in simple terms spin. I backed all the way down to the backside and then tried to get a working commence. i improve into spinning my wheels each and each of ways yet a million/2 way up the automobile got here to a end. and then inspite of my wheels spinning to flow forward the automobile began sliding backwards and slightly to the facet. I absolutely LOVE my Suburban four wheel drive for this purpose. My family drives the Montana prairies and mountains, particularly for skiing and we think this is really the best vehicle for the job. It has sufficient weight to hold the road, and is safe if you happen to slide off. Remember, no matter what you have, ice is slick and you will have trouble, so go slow!

Any vehicle can be safely operated in Mountains or snow What it comes down to is preparation the vehicle's and the drivers. Select tires designed to be used in snow. If your particular area has lots of ice, consider studs if they are legal in your area. If you go the stud route, do all four tires. Learn how to react to the situation by practicing. I'm sure the local police wouldn't take kindly to my next comment, but it's better to learn in a controlled situation than to practice on the highway. Go into a large, empty parking lot during or after a snowstorm and practice what to do in a slide. (If caught, I will disavow any knowledge of your actions:-} ) This will prepare you for the conditions you will encounter on mountain roads. Don't get in a hurry. Play your own game. If you are comfortable driving 35 mph, don't be intimidated by the H1 Hummer that blows by you at 55. You may just find him in the ditch down the road and you can wave as you drive by.Remember this. it is better to be late, than not to arrive at all.Four Wheel Drive will just get you further into the snowbank if you slide off the road. They may get you going better than 2Wheel drive but they will not stop you any faster. Don't get over-confident. Four wheel drive will actually cause more problems than it will help if you are running on ice. You step on the brakes and lock up an axle, it will inturn, lock up the other one as well now you are an unguided missile on a course for who-knows-where. Speed will be your biggest enemy.
